Lenovo has had pretty rocking sales with the Lenovo A6000/Plus and Lenovo K3 Note devices in India. And for devices that sell well, manufacturers are usually friendly towards software updates.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be officially announced by Google on Sept. 29th. But don’t think you’d get the Marshmallow update on your Lenovo devices as soon as Google announces it, that is a privilege for Nexus devices only.
For us folks with mid-range devices like Lenovo A6000 and K3 Note, if ever Marshmallow update is going to release officially, it’ll most probably be 90 days after the release by Google — Q1 2016.
For the Lenovo A6000, we’re not really sure if the device will even get the Marshmallow update officially from the company. There are many reasons for that to happen, but we guess Lenovo will only tell us about the “performance issues” with Marshmallow update on A6000. In reality though, the story is pretty different. Manufacturers don’t update most budget devices because they release upgraded models every then and now in the budget segment to have a card to play when consumers are looking for “latest phones” in the market. And so to keep older models less attractive to purchase, software updates are ceased to happen on them officially.
Anyway, thanks to the open nature of Android. You can always find rescue in custom ROMs like CM13, if your device manufacturer shamelessly denies support for software updates even when your device could handle the update just fine.
For Lenovo K3 Note, Marshmallow update should come officially from Lenovo in Q1 2016. The device is both new and capable of running the latest Android version, so there shouldn’t be any delay from Lenovo about it.
Also, now that Lenovo has Motorola team working under it, we hope the company would learn something from Motorola and be quick at rolling out the Marshmallow update for its own devices. Because Motorola will probably be the first to rollout Marshmallow update after Google does for its Nexus devices.
Expected release: Q1 2016
