Over the recent past, the smartphone camera has been gaining significant attention and thanks to things like variable aperture and 960fps super slow-motion video recording, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras have been on everyone’s lips. However, it appears that Samsung is playing around with this feature via the latest software update.
Since launch, users of the two Galaxy S9 handsets have been able to record slow-motion videos of up to 960fps in HD format, be it when shooting in manual or in automatic mode. But after the latest update, which comes with software version G960FXXU2BRG6 for the S9 and G965FXXU2BRG6 for the S9+, you won’t be able to shoot 960fps videos in manual mode, rather, you get only 480fps.

On the brighter side, this change means that you get to record a longer video of up to 0.4 seconds (12 seconds after processing) as opposed to the 0.2 seconds (6 seconds after processing) managed when using the 960fps mode, but the format is still HD in both cases. If you want to get up to 960fps, you’ll have to go the automatic way, which some people may find pretty annoying.
Just as a reminder, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ also support recording of full HD (1080p) slow-motion videos of up to 240fps. Although you don’t get dramatic slow-motion effects as you’d get using 960fps mode, the 240fps mode is more popular especially since it allows for a longer period of shooting the target.

Besides the tweaks to the camera, the BRG6 update also brings July 2018 security patches to the S9 pair alongside stability improvements to the AR Emoji feature. At the moment, the update is rolling out to the global variants of the S9 and S9+, but the same should arrive on carrier models sooner than later.
