Amidst growing mistrust and senate hearings, Instagram has quietly introduced a new feature to limit the time that teens spend on the app, especially at night. As per these changes, Instagram will nudge teenagers to ‘consider closing Instagram for the night’.
These ‘nighttime nudges’ will appear whenever teens spend more than 10 minutes on the app late at night.
Though the Meta-owned app will remind teens that “It’s getting late”, and encourage them to close the app, there’s very little done to actually prevent teenagers from using the app at night. After all, there’s nothing stopping teens from ignoring the nudge and continue using Instagram as usual.
Even though the implementation may be seen as ineffectual, it’s at least a step in the right direction. The question to ask is, where do we go from here?
