YouTube sometimes lets you try out experimental features that it’s been working on. Recently, it introduced a new ‘AI comments summary’ feature that uses AI to categorize and summarize the comments on a video so users can sift through them easily. Here’s how you can try it out yourself.
How to use AI on YouTube to summarize the comments
Being an experimental feature, the ‘Comment topics summarized by AI’ feature is available for limited use and only to certain users. Check the requirements below.
Requirements
To try out the ‘Comment topics summarized by AI’ feature, you’ll need to have a YouTube premium account. You also can’t have any other YouTube experiment turned on since YouTube only lets you try out one feature at a time. The feature is available until December 5th, 2023 for you to check out, and is available only on its Android and iOS app.
Turn on YouTube’s experimental new features
Here’s how you can turn on the ‘Comment topics summarized by AI’ feature via YouTube’s Try Experimental New Features page.

Open the YouTube app, tap on your profile icon, tap on Settings, select Try new features, and tap on Try it out under ‘Explore comment topics summarized by AI’. You can also enable this experimental new feature via youtube.com/new. But do note that the feature works only on the YouTube app, not the desktop site.

Use AI on YouTube videos to summarize the comments
Once you’ve turned on the experimental feature, you can find the AI summary of comments in the YouTube video’s comment section. Here’s how:

Open a YouTube video, tap on the Comments section, and select Topics. Here, you’ll find the comments categorized into AI-generated summaries. Tap on one to view the comments within it.

Things to Note
There are a few things worth noting while trying out YouTube’s AI comment summary feature.
Firstly, since it is an experimental feature, it may not be available on all YouTube videos, especially those that don’t have a large comment section to summarize. Furthermore, the feature currently only works for English videos and the experiment is only available for use until the 5th of December, 2023.
Once the experimental testing is over, it’s possible that we may get to see this feature roll out at full capacity. Until that time, patience is a virtue.

Does YouTube AI comment summary work on the desktop site?
No. Currently, YouTube AI comment summary is an experimental feature for YouTube’s Android and iOS apps only. When or if it will appear on YouTube’s desktop site hasn’t been specified by Google.
Why don’t I see ‘Topics’ in YouTube video comments?
The ‘Topics’ section won’t appear in a YouTube video’s comments section if the video doesn’t have a large enough comment section for the AI to summarize, or if the video is in any other language but English. Even if these two conditions are satisfied, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll see the ‘Topics’ section, chiefly because YouTube’s AI comment summary feature is still in its experimental phase.
