The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are out and about, and users are loving every inch of them already. But since the flagship devices from Samsung are just out and untested in the open world, expecting apps to crash and the device to freeze on you every now and then is not exactly too surprising.

The best way to fix a frozen device is to plug it out and plug it in, but what do you do when the screen freezes and you can’t access the power menu? Luckily, Samsung has built in a kill-switch that helps you force restart the Galaxy S9 no matter what the situation is.

How to force shutdown and restart the Galaxy S9 and S9+

Using a particular combination of buttons, you can force your Galaxy S9 and S9+ to restart the system. Here’s how to do this.

  • Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously until the device screen turns off.
  • If the device screen stays black and you’re unable to see if it has turned off, keep holding down the Power and Volume Down buttons until you feel a vibration.
  • To restart, just press and hold the Power button until the screen turns on and you’re all set!
