What to know
- Instagram’s Story Comments feature is enabled by default.
- Turn off comments while posting a story from the three-dot icon in the top right corner and select Turn off commenting.
- To disable comments completely, go to Settings & privacy > Comments > Story > Off.
Instagram’s new Story Comments feature is a shining example of how social media apps encourage interaction on their platforms. Since Stories are how most people share these days – and regular reels and posts don’t see much comment action – Instagram’s now decided to take the conversation space to stories.
Here’s how you can enable or disable comments for your Story.
Text guide
If your Instagram is updated with the new Story Comments feature, it’ll be enabled by default and you’ll need to turn it off manually. Here’s how:
While you’re posting your story, tap on the three-dot icon in the top right corner and select Turn off commenting.
If you don’t want to accidentally allow comments on your Stories, you can disable it completely as well. Here’s how:
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Tap on the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.
- Scroll down and tap “Comments”.
- Tap Stories.
- Select “Off”.

Now when you post a Story, you’ll notice that the option to turn comments on or off will have disappeared. You can now post your stories without worrying about turning comments off first.
If you want to enable comments in the future, simply undo the changes from the ‘Comments’ settings.
