What to know

  • Instagram lets you add collaborators to Reels even after you post them.
  • Open the posted Reel, tap on the three-dot icon, select Manage > Edit > Tag people > Invite collaborators. Select the user and tap Invite to collaborate. Once the user Accepts the invitation, the Reel will be added to their profile as part of the collaboration.
  • Collaboration doesn’t work for Stories or picture Posts. Only on Reels can you invite collaborators after posting.

Instagram’s collab feature has been a hit with users across the board, including content creators, brands, as well as the general user when they’re posting content that credits other users involved in the making of. But the feature has had limitations, in that you could invite collaborators only while posting, and not anytime later.

Thankfully, that has now been addressed. Instagram lets you invite and add collaborators to your Instagram reels even after you post them. Here’s all you need to know about it.

How to add collaborator on Instagram after posting

Being able to add collaborators to reels after posting is no less than a blessing. Since it lets you credit others even if you forgot about it at the time of posting, it encourages inclusivity and lets others highlight their contribution on their own profile. Here’s how you can add collaborators on Reels after posting:

Reels

  1. Open your Instagram app and tap on your profile icon.
  2. Open your Reel and click on the three-dots.
  3. Tap on Manage.
  4. Tap Edit.
  5. Tap Tap people.
  6. Select Invite collaborators.
  7. Search for the user and select them.
  8. Tap on Invite to collaborate.
  9. The collaborator will need to accept the invite. Once they do, the Reel will appear on their profile as well.

Here’s a visual guide of the process. Go full screen for a better view.

Things to note

  • Regardless of your account type, you can invite users with both public and private accounts. However, collaborators with private accounts will need to be following you first.
  • Only the creator of the Reel can delete the post. Doing so will remove it from the collaborator’s profile as well.
  • The collaborator cannot delete the post. But they can leave the collaboration at any time which will remove the post from their profile.

What about normal Posts?

Unfortunately, you can only invite collaborators after posing Reels. For normal picture posts, you’ll have to invite collaborators during posting. You won’t be able to do it afterward. However, you can still tag them after posting. So that’s some consolation.

Of course, you could always repost and add the collaborators while posting again. Or you could ask the user you want to collaborate with to repost or ‘remix’ your post and then invite you to collaborate with them during posting. However, since both these options snub the original post, they’re not ideal.

So, if you need to collaborate with others on picture posts, remember to do so at the time you’re posting.
