What to know

  • Grok is now available to all X users.
  • The AI chatbot lets non-premium users send up to 10 prompts every 2 hours, and generate 3 images a day.
  • Grok also has a Fun Mode that makes the AI chatbot respond in more humorous manner.
  • Grok is available to Premium users starting at $8/month or $84/year.

X users can now check out Grok without having to subscribe to X Premium. The early version of the AI chatbot had thus far been available for Premium users only. But the Elon Musk-owned social media platform has opened the doors for wider testing, allowing anyone with an X account access to it. Here's everything you need to know to get started with using Grok on X.

What can free X users do with Grok

Although non-premium X users can access Grok for a quick chat and get AI-generated images, there are hard limits on what you can do.

For starters, free users can only send up to 10 messages every 2 hours. This can be severely limiting and is bound to prevent users from really figuring out Grok's reasoning capabilities.

Secondly, free users are also limited to 3 AI-generated images per day. Again, this doesn't allow much opportunity to figure out what Grok 2 is capable of generating.

Developed by xAI, the chatbot is using the Grok 2 model which is still in its beta phase. So expect it to be a little rough round the edges. Additionally, even though Grok claims to have 'real-time access to the web and X posts', it was well behind on the information in our tests.

From your chat history, you'll be able to access your 'Chats' and 'Images' separately, which is nice.

You can upload PDF documents for analysis, which is not much given what most AI chatbots can do nowadays.

Free access to Grok only gives a taste of what xAI can do. If you're intrigued by what you see, you'll have to get Premium subscription that starts at $8/month or about $84/year.

And if you're bored, Grok also lets you try out a 'Fun Mode' which gives the AI chatbot a slightly hip and humorous edge in the chat.

But since you're limited to 10 messages, you may have to wait a while before the punch line lands.
