What to know

  • Google’s Satellite SOS feature allows emergency communication when cellular networks are unavailable.
  • It will be available for the Pixel 9 series at launch.
  • The feature will also initially be available in the US only (except Hawaii and Alaska).

Google is set to introduce a new safety feature called Satellite SOS for its Pixel smartphones. The purpose of Satellite SOS feature is to allow emergency communication for users when they are in a location where cellular networks are not available. Here’s everything you need to know about its availability and how it works.

How does Satellite SOS work

As the name suggests, the Satellite SOS feature allows users to send messages to emergency services. This can be crucial in remote areas or during natural disasters when regular communication methods fail. Google explains how the feature works on the Satellite Gateway app page (erstwhile Play Store).

You’ll see the option to use Satellite SOS when you try to call emergency services and there’s no Wi-Fi or cellular data. Thereafter, filling a simple questionnaire will allow you to send your details to emergency services and contacts.

One catch with Satellite SOS is that it will only function via Google’s dialer app. Another catch is that you’ll need to have Google Messages as you default messaging app to receive the emergency service provider’s replies. The service is disabled when you switch to another messaging app as your default.

When using Satellite SOS, all necessary information will be shared with emergency services, including location, name, phone number, email, etc.

When will Satellite SOS be available

The Satellite SOS feature will debut with the upcoming Pixel 9 series, which is slated to go on sale on August 22. While initially available for the Pixel 9 series only, there’s potential for the feature to expand to other Pixel models and Android devices in the future.

Google might also offer Satellite SOS free for two years, similar to Apple’s approach with its emergency satellite feature. However, no official pricing details have not been announced. Google’s introduction of Satellite SOS follows Apple’s similar feature launched in 2022. This move highlights the growing importance of satellite-based emergency communication in smartphones.

As smartphone makers continue to prioritize user safety, features like Satellite SOS are becoming increasingly important. Google’s entry into this space provides Pixel users with an additional layer of security, especially in challenging environments where traditional communication methods may fail.
