Google Nexus 6 Android M Root is here!

Android M root solution is available for Nexus 6 now, something you have been missing ever since you upgraded to latest Android OS (preview). We think many people with Nexus 6 were resisting the Android M update till a root solution was available. Thanks to DespairFactor, the root-not-available-yet period is gone, as you can root your Nexus 6 right away using his custom kernel, to be flashed before the SuperSU.

Remember, you have to flash the custom kernel first, and then the SuperSU package right after it. We’ve provided the links for both of them below, and the right way to install in the guide below. Check it out!

Here is how you can root Nexus 6 on Android M.

Downloads

• Despair kernel | File: Despair.M.Shamu.R2.4.zip
• SuperSU beta v2.49 | File: BETA-SuperSU-v2.49.zip

Above version will do fine to root Nexus 6 Android M build, but you can find the latest version of the kernel on the original development page here.

Supported devices

• GOOGLE NEXUS 6, running Android M, build MPZ44Q
• Don’t try on any other device whatsoever

Backup necessary stuff. In case your device is wiped off while following the guide below, it’s good to have a backup of contacts, photos, videos and other files already saved on PC.

Make sure that Android M is running on your Nexus 6, which you can download and install from here.

1. Install TWRP recovery for Nexus 6. Ignore this step if you already have it.
2. Download the Despair custom kernel and SuperSU file from above.
3. Transfer both files to phone’s storage. Remember the location where you put it.
4. Boot into recovery mode.
   1. Power off your device first.
   2. Then press and hold volume up + volume down + power button together until you see anything on screen. This is fastboot mode.
   3. Press volume down two times to reach recovery option, and then press power button to select it and boot into recovery mode.
5. [Optional] Make a backup. Once in TWRP recovery, take a backup of your current ROM/firmware. Select Backup, then do a “Swipe to Back Up” on the bottom of the screen. Wait for the backup to finish, it’s a time consuming process.
6. Root Android M on Nexus 6 now.
   1. Flash custom kernel first. On main menu of TWRP recovery, select Install. Navigate to and select the custom recovery file (Despair.M.Shamu.R2.4.zip) and then use ‘Swipe to Confirm Flash’ option at the bottom of the screen to flash it on the device.
   2. Now, flash SuperSU file the same way you flashed the custom kernel above.
7. Go to back to recovery’s Main menu, select Reboot » select System.

Device will restart and your Nexus 6 Android M build will be rooted. Enjoy!
