Google joins the Wireless Power Consortium, could bring wireless charging to Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL

Wireless charging functionality has been around on Android devices for the past few years, but it’s only becoming popular only now as more OEMs are launching devices with support for Wireless charging. And the latest to join the list is the company behind Android itself — Google Inc.

Google Inc. has just joined the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) which is a group of manufacturers who make devices with support for Qi Wireless charging standard. It’s an open standard maintained by WPC and its member companies.

Google joining the WPC means only two things. Either the upcoming Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL are going to support wireless charging OR Google has plans for other devices that are to launch in near future with support for wireless charging.

We’ve seen leaks of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL showcasing the devices in a metal frame build with a metal back. But Qi standard doesn’t yet support wireless charging through metal, so it’s unlikely that the upcoming Pixel phones would feature wireless charging. However, Google could be launching other devices in near future with wireless charging support. It could be a new Android Wear watch, if nothing else.

Notably, Apple recently announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X with support for wireless charging. And since Apple captures a large number of smartphone market share, it’s only obvious for other manufacturers to have wireless charging supported devices in their portfolio to compete with the new iPhones, and thankfully, most of the major Android manufacturers already have wireless charging supported phones out there in the market. It’s only Google who is joining the party late.
