General Mobile is one of the most prolific names when talking about Google’s Android One initiative. The Turkish company is among the companies that have continuously embraced the program since its birth and in fact, there’s a new device in the shape of General Mobile GM 8, which is already selling in the company’s home turf.
Other than bringing the best of Android in its most original form to the budget market, the new General Mobile GM 8 also packs the trending 18:9 display, a feature that we’ve used to associate mostly with the Samsung Galaxy S9s and iPhone Xs of this world.
Here are the specs of the GM 8:
- 7-inch LCD display screen with HD+ resolution (1440 x 720 pixels) and Gorilla Glass protection
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 octa-core clocked at 1.4GHz
- 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB variants
- 13MP main and 13MP selfie camera
- 3075mAh battery
- Android 8.0 Oreo
There’s a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner just below the main camera, which houses a 13MP lens with autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, Auto HDR, PDAF, and 1080p video recording. General Mobile also says that the GM 8 supports Portrait Mode and Dual Recording.
On the front of the GM 8 is another 13MP shooter, but this one has a slightly narrow aperture of f/2.2, but still supports 1080p video recording. Other specs and features of the GM 8 include a decent 3075mAh battery unit, Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, support for 4G LTE, ViLTE, Bluetooth 4.2, and 3.5mm audio jack.
While the specs of the General Mobile GM 8 might seem a little underwhelming, they are exactly what we expect from a device in the same price category as the GM 8. In Turkey, the phone can be yours for 999 Turkish lira, a figure that translates to about $260.
Of course, this is more costly than the likes of Xiaomi Mi A1 or the limited Moto X4 Android One edition, but none of these two has the luxury of a modern-day 18:9 display screen. As usual, the GM 8 should get at least two years of software support and for the photogenic, you get unlimited storage with Google Photos, just like with the Pixel phones. You can have the General Mobile GM 8 in any of Gold or Space Gray color variants.
General Mobile is also lining up a variant of the GM 8 that will debut at the MWC 2018 under the new Android Go umbrella. Like its counterpart, the GM 8 Go comes with an 18:9 design, but it gets a smaller display screen, a bigger battery unit and weaker specs compared to the Android One model.
