It isn’t surprising that Samsung isn’t officially releasing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to Galaxy S3. The device has been long forgotten by Samsung and the last official update S3 received was the Android 4.4 KitKat (in limited regions).

However, not getting the Marshmallow update officially doesn’t mean you won’t be able to install the freshest release of Android on your Galaxy S3. Being a bootloader unlocked device, your Galaxy S3 can get custom ROMs pretty easily, and with that a custom ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow as well.

Developer winxuser over at xda has just released an unofficial build of CM13 for Galaxy S3 I9305 (LTE) variant of the device. CM13 is the Marshmallow edition of the popular CyanogenMod custom ROM.

Since this is an initial release of CM13 for Galaxy S3, it has bugs and issues that you wouldn’t want to go with as your daily driver. But of course, if your S3 is just collecting dust on the forgotten corner of your desk. It might be a good idea to install CM13 and experience Marshmallow goodness on the device.

Below are the known issues/bugs on the ROM so far:

  • RIL (Cellular network, Data)
  • External SdCard (causes bootloops)

You can grab the Galaxy S3 CM13 ROM from the download link below and simply flash it over using TWRP recovery along with a Marshmallow compatible Gapps package.
