With the increasing apps in Android market that uses cloud services, there is an open discussion going on in all development forums about the safety of data in Android device. The data in the phone is routed to various servers all around the world by different apps for different purposes.

The security risk is high in some cases where the data in our device is routed without any encryption to other servers and we cannot overcome these potential risks all at once. This ViaProtect app is a humble attempt made by Via Forensics to atleast gain the knowledge of the where the data from our phone is being transferred to.

This app isn’t a much sophisticated security analyser but it gives the basic idea of which companies receive our data and what percent of our data is encrypted and many more. This app also alerts about malicious app behaviour in real-time.

The app gather mobile forensic, system, network, security and sensor data from devices, then utilizes statistical analysis and risk indicators to detect suspicious events or behaviour. This means that an app can be monitored in real-time to predict potential risks or problems rather than just checking for known malicious apps.

Well, the app is currently a public preview, so lets hope more features are included in the final revision.

The Good:
  • Free of cost
  • Lightweight app
  • Gives the information of insecure data
  • Provides network traffic information
  • Real-time threat monitor included
The Bad:
  • Doesn’t give the information of which apps send data to which company
