Facebook brings AI powered M assistant to Messenger

An avid Facebook Messenger user? Well, here’s something to make your life easier. A new feature added to Facebook Messenger not only enriches your chatting experience but literally provides you with an assistant which makes your Messenger usage more fun and smooth. This digital assistant for Facebook Messenger, launched today, has been named simply ‘M’.

M uses artificial intelligence (but don’t confuse it with the likes of Siri and Bixby) to suggest helpful actions to you while you are chatting. It will pop up into an open conversation, for example, to suggest your location when a friend asks where you are. It can also help you make plans with your friends by chipping in as coordinator.

M also shares fun sticker suggestions for your daily life interactions and simplifies other tasks such as sending or receiving money by recognizing when people are discussing payments. Other actions carried out by ‘M’ are: Starting a poll (in group conversations only) and Getting a Ride.

Describing how M works, Facebook states:

To experience M, simply chat with a friend or a group as you normally would. M may make a suggestion in a conversation relevant to one of the core actions listed above, and then the M logo and suggestion will appear.

This new ‘M’ digital assistant has been launched only in the US, as of now, for all iOS and Android users and will eventually be made available to other countries.

  1. Inspired by google allo perhaps? I still wish FB would make their main apps less burden-some on the phones
