Essential has released another new update for its camera app, bringing in more features and improvements. The Essential Phone, when first launched, had an okay camera that many didn’t like. However, the company has been delivering frequent updates to the camera, adding features and improving the performance that result in better photos.
In the latest update to the camera app, version 0.1.088, you get new features such as Portrait Mode, and new exposure compensation for all camera modes. The update also brings a feature that all users have been waiting for; Reduced JPEG compression!
Previously, a member of the Essential team had promised that uncompressed images will be available in an upcoming update. However, the previous update didn’t include the feature. Looks like they were indeed working on it and polishing the feature so it works well when launched. With the reduction in compression, users can now expect higher quality images.

Apart from these features, the camera app also gets stability fixes. The Portrait mode will give depth enabled photos, but we’re not sure how well it will perform since the Essential phone has an RGB and Monochrome sensor, but no telephoto lens that usually gives the best portrait photos.
As always, the Camera app is available as an update via the Google Play Store. You will be notified of the update, but if you didn’t get a notification, you can simply launch the Play Store and check for the update. The phone is yet to receive the Android Oreo update.
