Android 7.0 Nougat is coming with Multi Window support for both phones and tablets, but not all Android devices will get the update. If you’re a Sony Xperia user, it might take a while even for the supported Xperia devices to get the Nougat update in time.

But the god news is that you can enable multi window mode on Xperia devices without the Android Nougat update as well.

Google brought Multi Window support to Android with the Marshmallow release but kept it enabled exclusively for Android tablets only. However, as it turns out, the feature can be enabled on small screen devices (Android phones) as well by simply adding a line to the build.prop file of the device.

How to Enable Multi Window on Xperia Phones

  1. Make sure your Xperia phone is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow (or above) and at-least has either TWRP recovery OR Root access.
  2. Edit build.prop file: Add the persist.sys.debug.multi_window=true line to build.prop file on your Android device. Use the links below for help with editing build.prop file with and without root access.
  3. Reboot device after saving changes to build.prop file.

That’s all. Enjoy multi window support on your Sony Xperia device.

Happy Androiding!
