Touchscreens have tremendously changed the way we use smartphones, but if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed much yet, then it’s the way we unlock our phones — with a hardware button.

Thankfully though, this is changing quickly. In the recent years we’ve seen a number of smartphones featuring unique ways to unlock devices without using the power button. The one feature that stand out the most is — Double Tap To Wake.

In case you don’t know about Double Tap To Wake, it’s a simple system that let’s you unlock your smartphone with just two taps on the screen. It’s deliciously convenient, trust me.

With Double Tap To Wake you don’t have to locate the power button, which come on all sorts of places on Android devices, plus two taps on the screen works quicker than a hardware button. It’s definitely a feature for every smartphone, in my opinion.

Luckily for the Nexus 6P users, the code for Double Tap To Wake is already available in the system. It’s just sitting there dormant. And it can be activated with a simple command if you’ve root access on your 6P.

How to Enable Double Tap to Wake on Nexus 6P
  1. Get root. Here’s how to root Nexus 6P.
  2. Download and install a terminal emulator app from the Play Store, we recommend the free Material Terminal app.
  3. Open terminal and issue the following command to get root:
    su

└ If prompted, let SuperSU grant root access to the app.

  4. Now issue the following command to enable DT2W (Download Tap To Wake):
    echo 1 > /sys/devices/soc.0/f9924000.i2c/i2c-2/2-0070/input/input0/wake_gesture
  5. Double Tap To Wake should be activated now on your Nexus 6P. In case it doesn’t, just reboot phone once.

That’s all. Enjoy the convenience in unlocking the phone now.
