After its iOS launch, X (Twitter) is now extending its audio and video calling feature to Android as well. Similar to other social media apps, users won’t require a phone number to make and receive calls. Here’s everything you need to know to enable the audio and video call functionality and configure its settings.
How to enable audio and video calling on X
The steps to enable and configure audio/video calling on X are the same for Android and iOS devices. Here’s how you can do so:
- Update the app from the Play Store or the App Store. Then open the X app and tap on the Direct Messages option in the bottom right corner.
- Tap on Settings in the top right corner. Toggle on Enable audio and video calling.
Although all X users can receive audio/video calls, the ability to make calls is available only to Premium subscribers.
How to configure who can call you on X
- On the ‘Messages settings’ page, select who can call you. You can select from ‘People in your address book’, ‘People you follow’, and ‘Verified users’.
- To keep your IP address private from callers, enable the Enhanced call privacy feature.
For others to be able to call you, you’ll need to have messaged the account at least once. This is an important privacy feature that will prevent unwanted callers from spamming you.
FAQ
Let’s consider a few commonly asked questions about the audio and video calling feature on X.
Why don’t I see the ‘Enable audio and video calling’ feature in Message Settings on X?
Since the audio/video calling feature is a recent feature, make sure to update the X app on your device first. If it still isn’t available, have patience. It will be rolled out to you soon.
X has a Basic, Premium, and Premium+ membership tier. But X’s Help Center hasn’t specified if the Basic tier can also make calls. However, since the membership tiers all reside within the ‘Premium’ option, one can assume that by ‘Premium’ members, X in fact means all subscribers, including those with the Basic plan.
With the audio-video call functionality now available to Android and iOS users, it is only a matter of time before the feature becomes available to PC and Mac users as well. Until that time, keep an eye out for more updates.
