What to know
- Bluesky has launched blue checkmarks and an official verification system for accounts.
- The platform now allows trusted organizations to verify users directly, in addition to Bluesky's own verification process.
- Verification is free and does not require a paid subscription, unlike some other platforms.
- Users can still link their own domains for self-verification, and blue checks can be hidden in settings.
Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, has introduced a new verification system that adds blue checkmarks to accounts. This move aims to help users identify authentic and notable accounts more easily. The blue checkmark will appear next to the names of verified users, providing a clear visual signal of authenticity.
Previously, Bluesky relied on a system where users could set their domain as their username to prove their identity. While over 270,000 accounts have used this method, many found it complicated and not user-friendly. The new blue checkmark system simplifies verification and addresses concerns about impersonation on the platform.
Bluesky will proactively verify authentic and notable accounts. In addition, the platform is introducing a "Trusted Verifiers" feature. This allows select independent organizations, such as news outlets, to verify users directly. For example, a media company can now verify its journalists within the app. These trusted verifiers are marked by a scalloped blue check, and Bluesky’s moderation team reviews each verification to ensure authenticity.
Users can tap on a blue checkmark to see which organization granted the verification. If you prefer not to see verification badges, you can hide them in your account settings under Moderation and Verification Settings.
Currently, Bluesky is not accepting direct applications for verification from users. As the system stabilizes, the company plans to introduce a request form for those interested in becoming verified or acting as trusted verifiers. In the meantime, users can still self-verify by linking their domain to their username.
Unlike some other social media platforms, Bluesky does not charge for verification. The company’s approach focuses on building trust through both platform-led and community-driven verification, aiming to make social media interactions more transparent and reliable.
