AT&T has officially started the trial for its Project AirGig internet technology in the US. The technology was previously tested successfully in an international location. But now, the carrier is testing it in Georgia.

Project AirGig is a new way of providing internet services that will be much faster than broadband or optic fiber. It can deliver speeds over 1 gigabit per second using a millimeter wave signal. Instead of using regular cables, this technology will use power lines to distribute itself.

Trainer personnel can install the tech on power lines near a home within minutes. There wouldn’t be any need to build towers or install new cables. It would also mean that the people who live in areas with poor network coverage can also get access to internet via AirGig for cheap. And not to forget, we are talking about 1Gbps+ speeds over here.

According to the press release by AT&T, they have been working on this technology for over a decade and own over 300 patents related to it. This is really a big innovation in terms of internet delivery and speed.

The only major hurdle for AT&T right now, is negotiating deals with power providers. As of now, the Governor of Georgia has given the green signal to test the tech. Also, this trial is taking place in a rural area, and has also been given a go ahead by Georgia Power. After this, AT&T plans on expanding their trials in several other US locations.

AT&T did not provide any details as to when this technology would go commercial. However, the AirGig technology is definitely the way forward, and needs to become the norm in other countries as well. What do you think of this technology?
