ASUS has taken the stage at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona and announced the PadFone Infinity, the successor of the not yet widely available PadFone 2 – it sports a 5-inch 1080p display, runs on the new Snapdragon 600 processor, and the latest version of Android aka Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
To be exact, the processor underneath the PadFone Infinity is running at a clock speed of 1.7GHz with the powerful Adreno 320 graphics chip, both of which will easily power that 1080p display without breaking a sweat. There’s also 2GB of RAM as expected, meaning performance on the phone-cum-tablet should be blazing fast and without hiccups.
A 13 megapixel F/2.0 camera on the back takes care of the imaging needs, capable of up to 100 shots in burst mode and 1080p videos at 30 fps. The front-facing camera is an uninspiring 2 megapixel unit, but with the same F/2.0 aperture as the one on the back.
You also get up to 64GB of built-in storage, LTE and NFC connectivity, and a 2,400 mAh battery that provides 19 hours of 3G calls, 6.5 hours of web browsing, 9 hours of watching video or 410 hours of standby.
Of course, one can’t forget the PadFone Station tablet dock that comes along with every PadFone – the PadFone Infinity’s tablet companion has a display of 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution, which should be just as sharp as the 1080p 441ppi display on the phone itself.
The tablet dock also sports a 1 megapixel front camera, a microUSB 2.0 port, LTE antennas, and a 5,000 mAh battery, which should extend the already good battery life numbers of the phone. The tablet dock’s loudspeaker is powered by an 18mm driver for better sound, along with third generation Sonic Master audio technology. Also included is the Audio Wizard, which offers several preset audio modes.
All of the above features and specs don’t come cheap, however – ASUS has priced the phone and tablet duo at €999, making it the most expensive PadFone yet by some measure. The package you’re getting for that price is great, but we’ll no doubt see ASUS selling only a few of these, as always.
No word on availability yet, nor on where the device will be launched first.
