The voice mode is initially available to Claude Pro and Team subscribers, with plans to expand access to more users in the coming weeks. Enterprise customers will gain access to the feature by mid-June, according to Anthropic's announcement.
When using voice mode, you can have natural conversations with Claude by speaking and listening, rather than typing and reading responses. The system is designed to handle the back-and-forth flow of normal conversation, including pauses and interruptions.
"We've designed Claude's voice to sound natural and engaging while clearly being an AI," said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. "Our goal was to create a voice that feels helpful but doesn't try to pass as human."
The voice feature works across both mobile and desktop platforms. On mobile devices, you can use Claude's voice mode while on the go, similar to other voice assistants. On desktop, the feature integrates with the existing Claude web interface.
Anthropic has emphasized privacy considerations with this launch. Voice data is processed with the same security standards as text inputs, and the company stated that voice recordings are not retained longer than necessary for the service to function.
This addition brings Claude into more direct competition with other AI assistants that already offer voice capabilities, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Voice interaction represents a significant step in making AI assistants more accessible and useful in everyday scenarios.
Early testers report that Claude's voice sounds distinct from other AI assistants, with a conversational quality that maintains the assistant's characteristic thoughtfulness. The voice mode also preserves Claude's ability to handle complex queries and maintain context throughout a conversation.
Anthropic has indicated that they will continue refining the voice experience based on user feedback, with plans to add more voice options and features in future updates.
