What to know

  • Android users can now create and use passkeys on X (formerly Twitter).
  • Go to your profile Settings & privacy > Security > Passkey to set up a passkey for X on Android.
  • Passkeys provide a more secure alternative to traditional passwords.
  • The feature is being rolled out gradually to Android users globally

In a move towards enhanced security, X (previously Twitter) has introduced passkey support for Android users. This feature, which has been available to iOS and web users since July, is now being extended to the Android platform.

Passkeys represent a significant leap in online security. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys use cryptographic techniques to verify a user’s identity. This method is not only more secure but also more convenient for users.

How to set up passkeys for X on Android

  1. To set up a passkey, tap on your profile and select Settings & privacy > Security and account.
  2. Select Security > Passkey.
  3. Enter your password and tap Create passkey.
  4. Tap Continue and you’re done.

Once the passkey is set up, it can then used to authenticate the user when logging in, eliminating the need for a traditional password.

X is implementing this feature through a phased approach. While some Android users may already have access to passkey logins, others might need to wait as the feature is gradually made available globally.

Passkeys offer several advantages over traditional passwords, including enhanced security, login convenience, and cross-platform compatibility. X’s move aligns with a broader industry shift towards password-less authentication. Other companies like Google and Apple have also been promoting passkey technology.

As online security concerns continue to grow, the adoption of passkeys by platforms like X marks a significant step towards a more secure digital future for users across all devices.
