Xiaomi’s Redmi series can be pretty confusing for newbies. For instance, there’s the Redmi 5 Plus that sells in India as the Redmi Note 5 and then there’s the Redmi Note 5 Pro that sells outside India as the Redmi Note 5 AI.

As of this writing, the Note 5 Pro has had Android 8.1 Oreo for several weeks now (global Redmi Note 5 AI had Oreo out of the box), but the Redmi 5 Plus, the same phone sold in India as the Redmi Note 5, is only joining the party right about now.

There’s a new update that carries software version MIUI 9.6.5 and is targeting the Redmi 5 Plus with a software upgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo. For quite some time now, users of the device have been able to use Oreo 8.1, but only in beta. This ends today as the stable version has started rolling out. It’s a little disappointing that the update doesn’t include MIUI 10 stable, but it’s still okay now that there’s a new OS in town. Besides, MIUI 10 stable just started rolling out a while ago and it will be a while before it comes to the budget Redmi series.

The update has been released for a few Redmi 5 Plus users in what Xiaomi calls the MIUI 9 Beta Global Stable update, but the full rollout should begin before the end of the week if things go according to plan with respect to the beta global rollout.

You can download the recovery update below and install it manually rather than wait for the OTA update, which could take several days before it arrives.
