A month ago, a leaked firmware of the Redmi Note 5 based on Android 8.1 Oreo surfaced, prompting suggestions that the device was in line to receive the OS this Q2 2018. As is, the OS is now rolling out to the handset over the air, which is some pretty impressive stuff from a company that has often been bashed for its lack of commitment to delivering timely software updates.

The update that brings Android 8.1 Oreo to the Redmi Note 5 is MIUI Global Stable 9.5.6 (OEIMIFA), but it disappointingly comes with March 2018 security patches. The OS is rolling out to the Indian version of the Redmi Note 5, which is otherwise known as Redmi 5 Plus in other markets.

In short, now that the Redmi Note 5 is getting Android 8.1 Oreo in India, it won’t be long before other regions using the Redmi 5 Plus start receiving a similar treat. But of course, you can still keep your finger glued to the Software update button in the Settings menu and maybe you can trigger the OTA instead of waiting for who knows how long!
