Despite its February 2018 launch in India, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 did not have the latest operating system at the time preinstalled out of the box. Instead, it came with Android 7.1.2 Nougat and MIUI 9 on top, something that wasn’t received well.

While the company has been quick when it comes to rolling out updates to its custom MIUI skin, the story has been quite different with the underlying OS itself, until now. If you are in India, you can finally download and install the latest Android 8.1 Oreo update on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 as part of the rolling out MIUI 9 v9.5.17 update.

Besides bumping the installed software to Oreo and MIUI 9.5.17, the update also brings the latest Android security patches, optimizations for dual 4G connectivity and fixes for various bugs. Like any other major OS upgrade, Redmi Note 5 users should also notice significant improvements in performance and general stability after this update.
