Over the past few weeks, Motorola has been all over the place with Android Oreo software updates for the various Moto G5 variants available, but it’s only now that those using the standard Moto G5 from India can download and install this OS on their handsets.
The OS is rolling out with software version OPP28.85-16 and besides installing the new OS, it also brings along a new Android security patch for the month of August 2018 and stability improvements.
This is an OTA update, meaning it will take some days before all Moto G5 handsets in India get the download notification. This should explain why your friend has already received the OS but you haven’t, although the wait won’t be long.

If you can’t wait, you can try forcing the update by heading to the Settings menu and check for System updates manually, although there’s no way to guarantee this method will earn you a swift upgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo on your Moto G5. Still, good luck!
