About OI2 Android 5.1.1 Root for AT&T Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge [Explained]

AT&T came up pretty late but it has finally updated its Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge to Android 5.1.1 update, but you may be already musing about whether to go for it or not, if root access is what that concerns you more.

It’s possible that you still have your AT&T Note 4 and Note Edge rooted, thanks to PingPong root that came months before, thus avoiding updates of all kind thus far to keep root access.

But this is Android 5.1.1, and the root question becomes even bigger.

Current Availability of 5.1.1 Root

Well, as of now (Oct 10, 2015), root access is Not Available for AT&T Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge.

We’d say, that if you love root, then simply don’t update to Android 5.1.1 just yet. Wait for root method to arrive, and keep watching this space for that as we will be sure to share it with you once it’s released.

5.1.1 is a good update, but it’s not Marshmallow, you know, something that you will get on your device after next 4-5 months.Yes, that’s a huge delay for an update but look at what happened with Android 5.1.1.

Root isn’t simple now-a-days. Earlier, you had the privilege of rooting through CF Auto Root, the one great tool that was used to gain root access on 90% of the Samsung Android devices.

But that’s not a case anymore, CF Auto Root doesn’t work on any Android 5.1.1 update, whichever Samsung device it is, and it doesn’t work currently on 6.0 either obviously.

On 5.1.1, to achieve root, you need a custom kernel, that has to be flashed through Odin. That’s how we rooted Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, Edge+ and the Note 5 on Android 5.1.1.

Android 5.1.1 Root: Expected Release Date

Because AT&T isn’t friendly with development and has locked down the bootloader of its Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, even if a custom kernel is cooked up, the device aren’t likely to see root access because you don’t have a way to install the kernel along with TWRP recovery on the these two unlucky sets.

Normally, Odin PC software does the job, but because the bootloader is locked for both AT&T Note 4 and Note Edge, Odin can’t flash a thing on the devices, and as such, custom kernel and TWRP recovery cannot be installed.

So, unless magic happens!

Meaning, unless a global root trick like PingPong is discovered, something that works across many or most Android devices because of a bug unearthed, which can be used to obtain root access, root isn’t possible on AT&T Note 4 and Note Edge.

And which is why you can’t have a release date as we can’t predict for such a bug to be discovered, and a root tool becoming available based on that. Hard luck!

You have our sympathy, AT&T subscribers.
