Where the seeds actually fall
Both seed types come from random weather events, not from Sam’s Seed Shop. There are two that matter: a Rainbow event and a Golden event. During each, there’s a small random chance that rainbow or gold seeds rain down across the whole server, and you collect them off the ground for nothing. The drops are server-wide and multiple seeds fall at once, so a fast player can grab more than one per event.
Touching a seed does not auto-collect it — when you reach one, press E to claim it into your seed inventory. Players report the events tend to fire at night and last only about 2 minutes, so the window is short and you need to move. There’s no verified timer in any source right now; the spawn is described as completely random, which is why staying online through the evening gives you the most chances.
Server choice matters. The events are far more reliable on public servers. A guide creator who first thought drops couldn’t happen in private servers later corrected that — they can drop privately, but the chance is described as “much, much lower,” with one player even reporting an event in a private server that produced no seeds at all. What a Rainbow or Gold Seed grows

Separate events like Midas let players with the effect steal crops and turn them gold, so leaving a high-value plot wide open during one is a costly mistake.
