Subnautica 2 introduces a new progression system called Adaptations, which permanently evolve your character through alien biological mutations. Instead of relying entirely on crafted gear, the game now ties exploration and survival directly to your body’s evolution. These upgrades are obtained from giant organic structures known as Angel Combs, which are hidden throughout the world and often connected to major story progression.

How Adaptations work in Subnautica 2

Adaptations act as permanent upgrades that unlock access to harsher environments and new gameplay systems. Each Adaptation changes how your character interacts with the world, whether that means surviving lava zones, consuming alien organisms safely, or understanding advanced alien structures.

Pressure Tolerance is the first Adaptation you receive in Subnautica 2. It allows your character to survive underwater pressure safely and serves as the introduction to the Adaptation system.

Adaptations are one of the biggest progression systems in Subnautica 2 because they replace many traditional survival barriers. Instead of simply crafting stronger suits or equipment, you evolve biologically to survive the planet itself.

This system makes exploration feel more natural and encourages players to actively search for Angel Combs hidden across the world.

At the moment, only four confirmed Adaptations are fully accessible in Subnautica 2 Early Access. Each one unlocks new survival mechanics and opens access to previously dangerous areas. As the game continues to expand during Early Access, additional Adaptations will likely be added alongside new biomes and story content.
