What to know
- The Tadpole Pens are located around 675 meters east of the Lifepod in the lava vent biome.
- You cannot fully investigate the area until you unlock Heat Tolerance Adaptation.
- The locked door inside requires data from Zip’s Blackbox rather than a manual code entry.
- Bringing a Tadpole vehicle, upgraded oxygen gear, food, water, and batteries is strongly recommended.
The “Investigate Tadpole Pens” objective is one of the first major exploration puzzles in Subnautica 2. Unlike earlier distress signals, this mission takes you into a much more dangerous biome filled with heat vents, hostile creatures, and deep cave systems. Many players reach the locked door inside the facility and get stuck because the game does not clearly explain where the keycode actually comes from.
Here is everything you need to know about reaching the Tadpole Pens, surviving the area, and unlocking the sealed door.
| Quick Overview | Details |
|---|---|
| Main Objective | Investigate Tadpole Pens |
| Recommended Depth | 250m–450m |
| Location | Lava vents biome, east of Lifepod |
| Required Upgrade | Heat Tolerance Adaptation |
| Recommended Vehicle | Tadpole |
| Important Item | Zip’s Blackbox |
| Major Threat | Collector Leviathan |
| Reward | Story progression and access to Alien Ruins |
Where the Tadpole Pens are located
The Tadpole Pens are found roughly 675 meters east of the Lifepod inside the volcanic lava vent region.
Before traveling there, you should prepare properly because this area is much more dangerous than the early-game coral zones. The heat vents constantly damage unprepared players, oxygen becomes a serious issue, and aggressive creatures patrol the region.

You should ideally bring:
| Recommended Preparation | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Heat Tolerance Adaptation | Prevents heat damage |
| Rebreather | Improves oxygen efficiency |
| High Capacity Air Tank | Extra survival time |
| Tadpole Vehicle | Safer deep exploration |
| Spare Batteries | Essential for tools |
| Medkits and Water | Long-distance survival |
How to unlock Heat Tolerance Adaptation
You cannot safely explore the Tadpole Pens without the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.
To obtain it, you must travel around 200 meters northwest of the Lifepod and clear the infected Angel Comb area using the Sonic Resonator.

The Sonic Resonator destroys the viral flowers blocking access to the adaptation upgrade. Once cleared, you can interact with the structure and permanently unlock heat resistance.
Without this adaptation, the lava vent biome becomes extremely difficult to survive.
How to get into the Tadpole Pens in Subnautica 2
Once you are equipped, head east from the Lifepod until the environment changes into a volcanic trench system filled with glowing lava cracks and darker water.
The safest approach is to travel with the Tadpole vehicle because it provides:
- Extra oxygen
- Better mobility
- Protection from smaller predators
- Faster travel speed
You should also stay close to terrain walls while moving through the lava vent biome. Open water in this region is dangerous because the Collector Leviathan frequently patrols nearby.

What happens inside the Tadpole Pens
When you first enter the Tadpole Pens, you can freely explore part of the structure. Inside the right-side room, you will discover information explaining that the door code was taken by a colonist named Zip.

At this point, many players assume they need to manually search for a keypad combination, but the game actually uses a hidden progression system tied to a blackbox recording.
The locked door will remain inaccessible until you recover Zip’s Blackbox.
How to find Zip’s Blackbox in Subnautica 2
The Zip Blackbox is hidden inside the nearby Hot Caves area southwest of the Tadpole Pens.
Look for a large opening descending deeper underground around the 500m–540m range from the Lifepod. Follow the descending cave pathways rather than trying to swim straight downward. The cave system naturally spirals deeper.

Eventually, you will locate blackbox wreckage inside the cave network. Continue deeper until you find Zip’s Blackbox specifically.
If you return to your base or an NOA terminal and wait briefly, the game may automatically mark the blackbox location for you. However, you can also locate it manually.

There is no manual keypad number you need to remember. The game simply flags the door as unlocked after scanning the recording.
How to open the locked Tadpole Pens door
After collecting Zip’s Blackbox data, return to the Tadpole Pens facility and interact with the locked door again.

The PDA authorization automatically unlocks the entrance, allowing you to continue deeper into the facility and progress the story.
This section also leads toward the important Alien Ruins progression path and several Tadpole upgrade opportunities.

Investigating the Tadpole Pens successfully
The Tadpole Pens mission can feel confusing at first because the game hides the solution behind environmental exploration rather than a direct quest marker. Once you understand that the locked door requires Zip’s Blackbox data, the objective becomes much easier to complete.
As long as you prepare with the Heat Tolerance Adaptation, a reliable oxygen setup, and preferably the Tadpole vehicle, you can safely explore the lava vents, recover the blackbox, and continue one of the most important storylines currently available in early access.
