How to prepare before engaging the bear

  • Stock meat in your inventory: bring at least one stack of any meat to feed the bear once mounted.
  • Equip a weapon with controlled damage so you can gradually reduce the bear’s health without killing it.

  • Save or set a nearby respawn point so you can repeat the process quickly if the attempt fails.

How to get the bear into a mountable state

Step 1

Approach the spawn cautiously and engage the bear with light, measured attacks so you only chip away at its health.

Step 2

Avoid burst damage or strong skills that risk an accidental kill; your aim is to push the bear into a weakened, staggered state where an interaction prompt appears.

Step 3

When the mount interaction prompt shows, immediately use it to climb onto the bear before it recovers.

How to feed and raise trust

Step 4

While mounted, open your inventory and highlight a meat item you want to feed.

Step 5

Hold the feed button shown in the control prompts (controller: A; keyboard: the interact/feed key) to present the meat and feed it to the bear.

Step 6

Continue feeding meat until the trust meter reaches 100; repeated feedings are required and the meter fills incrementally.

When the trust meter reaches 100 the bear becomes a registered mount in your mounts list and can be summoned like any other mount. After registration, you can call the bear from the mount menu and ride it normally.

Tips and troubleshooting

  • If you accidentally kill the bear, respawn at the nearby fast travel and try again.

  • If you struggle to stagger the bear, switch to lower-damage skills or weaker weapons to avoid overkill.

  • Keep several stacks of meat to avoid running out mid-attempt.

  • Approach from cover or use hit-and-run tactics to bait the bear into the mountable state safely.
