What to know

  • Starfield launches on PS5 on April 7, 2026 with its biggest update yet
  • DualSense features add new immersion in combat and exploration
  • PS5 Pro introduces both 4K visual and 60 FPS performance modes
  • Free Lanes update and Terran Armada DLC expand core gameplay

When you play Starfield on PS5, you are not just getting a simple port—you are getting a version designed around Sony’s hardware alongside a massive game-wide update.

The biggest immediate difference comes from the DualSense controller. Weapons and ship combat now feel more tactile through adaptive triggers, where each gun or ship system has a distinct resistance and feedback. This means you can sense the difference between firing a laser weapon and a ballistic rifle directly through your controller.

The light bar is also used actively. It changes color based on your health or ship status, turning red during danger and shifting back as you recover. At the same time, audio logs and in-game communications play through the controller speaker, adding another layer of immersion while exploring space or engaging in missions.

Navigation and controls are also reworked for PS5. The touchpad allows you to quickly access menus, switch perspectives, open maps, and activate tools like the hand scanner with simple presses or swipes. This reduces menu friction and keeps gameplay flowing more smoothly.

Performance is another major upgrade, especially if you are playing on PS5 Pro. You can choose between a visual mode that targets 4K at 30 FPS for better fidelity, or a performance mode targeting 60 FPS for smoother gameplay. Both modes use Sony’s upscaling tech to improve clarity and consistency.

Even on the base PS5, performance mode is available from day one, which is notable because earlier versions of the game launched without higher frame rate options.

Beyond hardware features, the PS5 release arrives alongside the Free Lanes update, which significantly changes how you explore the galaxy. You can now travel more freely between planets within a system instead of relying heavily on fast travel. Exploration encounters are expanded, and a new resource system improves customization for weapons, gear, and ships.

Outposts are also more flexible, with shared storage, additional features like pets, and expanded building options. New ship modules, side quests, and gameplay systems further deepen progression and sandbox freedom.

At the same time, the Terran Armada DLC launches alongside the PS5 version. This paid expansion introduces a new storyline, a companion, and a major threat involving advanced robotic enemies across the Settled Systems.

All of this means the PS5 version is effectively a refreshed edition of the game. You are stepping into a more polished, more flexible, and more immersive version of Starfield compared to its original 2023 release.
