What to know
-
Mine red sandstone cobble from exposed blocks in the Howling Sands (Zone 2), often on cliffs or in brown desert areas.
-
Smelt 2 cobble in a furnace to get 1 red sandstone block; double your mining yield accordingly.
-
Right-click with a hammer to convert cobble back to smooth sandstone without smelting.
-
Use red sandstone primarily for clay crafting (4 blocks = 1 clay) or decorative builds like walls and slabs.
Red Sandstone is a vibrant building material and crafting component in Hytale, but mining it doesn’t immediately grant the smooth blocks one would expect. Instead, the raw material drops as a cobbled variant. To achieve the refined look required for certain recipes—such as making clay—you must utilize the furnace to smooth out the stone’s texture.

Red Sandstone Location
Head to the Howling Sands in southern Orbis for the best red sandstone cobble deposits—these appear on sandstone cliffs, dunes, and cave walls amid sandy canyons, distinguishing them from Zone 1 forests.
How to acquire red sandstone
If you haven’t yet, craft a Furnace first at the Workbench, and use 6 Tree Trunks (any type) and 6 Stone.
Gather fuel like wooden logs, which burn efficiently for smelting. Then follow the steps to get red sandstone.
Step 1: Locate and mine
Travel to Howling Sands (Zone 2) and spot reddish-brown blocks on elevated terrain or underground—punch or use a pickaxe/hammer to harvest as much red sandstone cobble as needed.

Step 2: Fuel the furnace
Place your furnace, add fuel (e.g., tree trunks) to the Fuel slot, then load red sandstone cobble into the Input slot.

Step 3: Smelt and collect
Activate the furnace; every 2 Red Sandstone Cobble yields 1 Red Sandstone—collect from Output once done.

Step 4: Alternative hammer method
Equip a hammer, right-click placed cobble blocks to revert to smooth red sandstone without fuel.

Red Sandstone crafting uses
Red sandstone serves as a key ingredient beyond basics.
