The rumors of a $99 Nexus tablet being made by Google and ASUS were squashed when ASUS officially denied them and said that they weren’t doing any such thing. And ASUS might have been telling the truth, as DigiTimes is reporting that a $99 Google Nexus tablet is real but will be manufactured by Taiwan-based Quanta Computer instead of ASUS, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

The $99 Nexus will supposedly launch some time in Q4 this year in the US, and will sport a single-core WM8950 ARM Cortex-A9 processor made by China-based WonderMedia Technologies, and a HUVA TN display panel made by Taiwan-based HannStar Display. A single-core processor seems right at home on a $99 tablet, but those expecting amazing specs at a low price like the Nexus 7 will surely be disappointed.

Quanta Computer refused to comment on the rumor, and as long as they don’t deny it, we can expect the rumor to have some fact behind it. With Apple presumably bring the low-cost (at least by Apple’s standards) iPad Mini to the market soon, it is going to be a tough time for the Nexus 7, so a cheaper $99 tablet from Google seems quite plausible.
