Even as LG struggles to generate a profit from its mobile phone department and prepares to unveil its first 5G phone at the MWC 2019 event to be held on February 25, in Spain, it has already set up shop to possibly be the lead in the race to bring out 6G a decade or so years from now.

LG has carved out a research center in the Yuseong District of Daejeon, South Korea and formed a partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, with the aim to “lead global standardization and secure new business creation opportunities.”

When making the official announcement, though, LG’s spokesperson clarified that while research work on 6G had begun, there were no plans to start working on a 6G phone, as of now.

With the promise of up to Terabits-per-second speed, unlimited bandwidth, zero lag, and virtually omnipresent connectivity, 6G aims to plug the holes left in 5G and its framework. It is speculated to roll out by the time 2030 arrives.
