Android 6.0 Marshmallow release is around the corner, probably the 29th of this month with the launch of Nexus 5 2015. The update is cool and provide many useful features to further enhance Android experience. However, for the users of Xposed it maybe bad news that Xposed won’t support Marshmallow at release.
Xposed framework has had compatibility issues ever since Google shifted Android to ART runtime from Dalvik. Xposed was originally built upon Dalvik and with permanent change to ART on Lollipop, Xposed framework broke down horribly for all devices.
But thanks to the holy folks developing Xposed framework, it was finally made compatible with the Android 5.0 Lollipop release. It wasn’t a complete recovery though, and not all Xposed modules that worked on KitKat made it to Lollipop. But it made things beautiful again.
However, yet again, Android 5.1.1 update happened and Xposed broke again as Google made significant changes to ART runtime. Thankfully, after a couple of months, a beta version of Xposed framework surfaced that worked with some of the devices running 5.1 update. But it just barely made it.
Now, come today and we’ve Android 6.0 Marshmallow coming with yet another change to ART runtime and things are again going to break for Xposed framework. We’ve had Android M developer preview for a few months now, and Xposed hasn’t so far made compatible for the Marshmallow release.
Installing Xposed on Android M preview builds puts a device into bootloop. Now we don’t if this will be big deal for the developers to make Xposed compatible with Marshmallow OR a few small changes would be enough fix things. We hope the later holds true, and things aren’t so bad between Marshmallow and Xposed.
As for the development status, we don’t have any official word from the maintainers of Xposed about compatibility with Marshmallow. Maybe they are waiting for the final release of Marshmallow before working on making Xposed compatible with the update.
Anyway, we’ll find out more about it when Android 6.0 Marshmallow update releases on 29th September with the launch of new Nexus 5. We’ll update this page as and when we learn of any development Marshmallow and Xposed framework. Stay tuned..
