Xiaomi’s Surge S2 SoC to debut with Mi6s or Mi6c in Q4

Xiaomi Mi 6

Remember Xiaomi’s in-house Surge S1 SoC launched earlier this year with the Xiaomi Mi5c? Well, it looks like the company is currently working on its successor dubbed Surge S2 SoC already.

Reports coming in straight from Taiwan suggest that “Xiaomi has carried out sampling of its in-house developed Surge S2.” Apparently, the company’s in-house chipset will be manufactured on the 16nm process node, unlike its predecessor which was built on 28nm node.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is once again tipped to manufacture the chip for Xiaomi. Reportedly, the Surge S2 chipset will enter volume production sometime in the third quarter (Q3) of this year, i.e., 2017 and will be launched later this year.

The report also suggests that the chipset will likely debut with the upcoming Xiaomi Mi6s or the Mi6c in Q4 this year.

The Xiaomi Mi6 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 chipset which is built on 10nm node. So, it’s highly unlikely for the Mi6s to be launched with a chipset that’s built on a 16nm node which leaves us with the Mi6c.

To recall, the Surge S1 SoC was launched with the Xiaomi Mi5c. So, it makes more sense for the company to launch the Mi6c with the Surge S2 chipset.
