Xiaomi is known for offering high-end devices at an affordable price range. But hardly is it acclaimed for software updates. But wait. It seems, the Chinese OEM is working hard at this as well. Keeping its promise, Xiaomi has started rolling out Android 7.1 Nougat update to its new smartphone Mi 5C, even before this month ends.

At the time of the launch of Xiaomi Mi 5C, which was towards the end of last month, the company announced that it will upgrade the Android Marshmallow OS on board the Mi 5C to MIUI 8 based Android 7.1 Nougat in March. And bang on time, the update has arrived.

A Weibo post revealed that the Android 7.1 Nougat update is being seeded over the air to Mi 5C smartphones running the MIUI 8 developer ROM. Now, for the uninitiated, here’s a piece of backgrounder. Xiaomi uses flexible MIUI giving users the freedom to retain a Stable ROM, Developer ROM, or even a Ported ROM developed by unofficial developers.

Sadly, those with a stable build of MIUI 8, which is the case with all Mi 5C users who have not shifted to the developer ROM option, will not be receiving the Android 7.1 update currently. But there’s still a way for you to taste Nougat. You can download the Developer ROM from the MIUI Forum and then become eligible for the Android 7.1 update which is being rolled out. But if you are not good at flashing your phone, we would advise you to wait till Xiaomi starts pushing the Android 7.1 Nougat to Mi 5C running MIUI 8 Stable ROM.

Now, as developer ROMs are usually updated every week (other than on special occasions like Chinese national holidays), and a new software update already rolling out for Xiaomi Mi 5C users running developer ROM, they can now be assured to receive weekly OTA updates starting from today.
