What to know
- X Chat replaces traditional DMs with encrypted chats and privacy-focused features.
- New tools include disappearing messages, screenshot blocking, and editing or deleting sent texts.
- Voice and video calling, file sharing, and message requests to non-followers are supported.
- Chat is available free for most users, with some features reserved for X Premium subscribers.
X (formerly Twitter) has launched Chat, an overhaul to the app's messaging system, focusing on privacy and security for everyday communication. This feature merges standard direct messages with advanced end-to-end encryption, allowing both one-on-one and group chats to stay protected from outside access.

Chats are accessible from the left navigation bar (mobile) or messages tab (desktop), only after setting a four-digit code the first time you use the feature. The new Chat option separates encrypted and unencrypted inbox tabs, so previous conversations remain accessible in the old format.
All encrypted chats work across multiple devices. Logging out will erase encrypted messages and their keys, but users can restore their keys elsewhere using their personal PIN.
The update introduces several privacy enhancements and flexible controls, including:
- Disappearing messages: Set a timer for messages to auto-delete after viewing, keeping sensitive info short-lived.
- Screenshot blocking and alerts: Block participants from capturing screens, plus notifications if anyone tries.
- Edit and delete options: Change or remove messages as needed, even after they’re sent.
- Group chats and media: Share images, files, and videos securely, with encryption for all types of content.
- Voice/video calls: Chat integrates calls into the inbox, supporting encrypted audio and video. Voice notes will be supported soon.
Say hello to Chat – all-new secure messaging on X.

Encrypted conversations can be started only if both parties opt in for encryption, follow/subscribe to each other, or have previously interacted. Message requests are open to verified users or those allowing general requests.
With the update, X Chat improves messaging privacy. But there are certain limitations to be aware of. Encryption protects content but not all metadata—recipient, creation time, and message sharing remain exposed to X. Similarly, there is person-to-person and group chat encryption, but no perfect forward secrecy yet. If one key is breached, all past chats could be at risk.
X Chat’s encrypted messaging, calls, and privacy controls create a more secure messaging environment on the platform. However, users must remain aware of metadata exposure and evolving encryption protocols. This update sets the stage for ongoing privacy improvements and a more unified messaging experience on X.
