When you first hear of UMi, it doesn’t really ring a bell, to be honest. UMi is a five-year old Chinese OEM which specializes in premium smartphones. As shown in the Geekbench listing above, the UMi Z (company’s current flagship) will soon be getting the Android 7.1.1 update.

For a Chinese OEM with mediocre popularity, this spells good news. At first glance, UMi’s product page tells us that the UMi Z is kind of like a Frankenstein device, with parts like a Sony battery, Samsung camera sensors, a display from Sharp, etc.

But then again, UMi has dedicated itself to provide the best of the best and in a way it delivers that with their flagship, the UMi Z. The device is apparently the first to be powered by MediaTek’s Helio X27 chipset and the company even boasts that the UMi Z runs pure Android out of the box.

With more emphasis given to the design of the phone, which has an unibody aluminum chasis and the like, UMi is looking to entice the premium crowd with such devices. The UMi Z has already been upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat a couple of months back. With pure stock Android being offered, UMi has taken a step in the right direction.

If the company manages to provide consistent updates till Android O and maybe above, they will surely earn a name for themselves among the top guns. Then again, this is the very area that all OEMs struggle with, thereby leaving Android in a fragmented state.
