Tesla is preparing to launch its Terafab project, a massive semiconductor initiative focused on manufacturing artificial intelligence chips. CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the project will begin within seven days, marking a significant step in Tesla’s push to control its AI hardware supply chain.

The initiative centers on producing custom AI processors designed for Tesla’s autonomous technologies. These chips power systems such as Full Self-Driving software, along with AI training infrastructure and future robotics platforms. Tesla is also developing a fifth-generation AI chip that will support these capabilities and increase computing performance for its vehicles.

Terafab represents a shift from Tesla’s current model, where the company designs its chips but relies on external manufacturers to produce them. Today, many advanced chips used by technology companies are fabricated by a small number of global foundries, primarily Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung. Tesla has worked with these partners, but the company believes external capacity may not be sufficient for its future AI needs.

Musk has previously argued that the growing demand for AI computing will require far greater chip production than existing suppliers can provide. The Terafab concept is designed to address that challenge.
