What to know
- You’ll need Giant Barb Fish Eggs before you can unlock the Expert Angler quest requirements.
- Giant Barbs are commonly caught in the river just outside the village, with another good spot at Cloud Rest Lake.
- Kingfish require at least a Golden Rod, and each ocean zone has its own kingfish species.
- Kingfish availability depends on season and time of day, so timing matters.
In Starsand Island, you can become an Expert Angler by first producing Giant Barb Fish Eggs, then traveling to an ocean fishing zone and catching two region-specific kingfish with a strong enough rod. Once you’ve met the prerequisites, the path is straightforward: catch the right fish in the right places, use a fish pond for eggs, then turn everything in to the correct NPCs in order.
| Part | What you do | Where it happens | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prerequisite | Get Giant Barb Fish Eggs | River outside the village or Cloud Rest Lake | Catch Giant Barbs, then use a fish pond with fish food |
| Unlock | Turn in eggs, then receive the Expert Angler quest | Turn in to Hattie, then talk to Delphin | Correct hand-ins in the right order |
| Main objective | Catch two kingfish | Celeste Wave, Coral Sea, or Lumen Wave (or specific rivers for other kingfish types) | Minimum Golden Rod (or better) |
| Completion | Hand in after second kingfish | Delphin | Two kingfish caught and ready to turn in |
Where to go for every stage
For Giant Barbs, focus on the river just outside the village, with Cloud Rest Lake as a solid backup spot.

For kingfish, you’ll head to one of the ocean fishing zones around the island: Celeste Wave, Coral Sea, or Lumen Wave, which you can reach by taking your own boat or getting ferried from the area south of the Starsand Island port.

How to get Giant Barb Fish Eggs
Step 1: Track the requirement and target Giant Barbs
Open your quest log to confirm you need Giant Barb Fish Eggs, then plan to fish primarily in the river outside the village. If your catches are slow there, rotate to Cloud Rest Lake and keep fishing until you land enough Giant Barbs.
Step 2: Improve your chances of hooking epic fish
Use a higher-tier rod if you have one available, since better rods increase your odds of catching epic fish like Giant Barbs. If you have access to angler skill upgrades, raising the daytime rare-catch boost can help you land them faster.

Step 3: Put Giant Barbs into a fish pond and feed them
Once you have at least two Giant Barbs, place them into a fish pond and make sure it’s stocked with fish food. Giant Barbs take up a lot of pond capacity, so confirm the pond can fit two before you commit.

Step 4: Collect Giant Barb Fish Eggs and turn them in
Wait until you get Giant Barb Fish Eggs from the pond, then bring the eggs to Hattie and hand them in.

After that, go speak with Delphin to move on to the Expert Angler requirements.

How to catch two kingfish for Expert Angler
Step 1: Accept the Expert Angler quest from Delphin
After the dialogue sequence, accept the quest that requires you to catch kingfish. This is the point where you’ll transition from inland fishing to specific ocean (or certain river) kingfish targets.

Step 2: Travel to an ocean fishing location
Go to one of these ocean zones: Celeste Wave, Coral Sea, or Lumen Wave. If you’re navigating yourself, you can mark a zone on the map to help you steer and know when you’re arriving.

Step 3: Confirm your rod meets the minimum requirement
You must have at least a Golden Rod to catch kingfish. If your rod is below that tier, upgrade it at a workbench (you may need at least a level 2 workbench), then return to the fishing zone.
Step 4: Fish where you see active fish shadows
When you arrive, look for visible fish activity in the water and cast into it. Keep fishing until you land your first kingfish.

Step 5: Handle empty water if the spot runs dry
If the fish activity disappears, you have two practical options:
- Bring bait so you can keep fishing productively.
- Use the ocean fishing approach where fish can still appear after you cast even without fish shadows (it takes longer, but fish will eventually show up and bite).
Step 6: Manage stamina so you don’t waste the trip
Fishing drains stamina over time, so bring food to keep going instead of being forced to leave early. This helps you finish both kingfish in one outing.

Step 7: Catch your second kingfish in the correct region
Kingfish are region-locked, meaning you won’t catch a different region’s kingfish while staying in the same zone. If your current zone doesn’t match the kingfish you still need, travel to the correct zone and continue fishing until you get the second one.
Step 8: Remember season and time restrictions
Kingfish only appear during certain hours and certain seasons. If you’re not getting bites despite meeting the rod requirement, adjust your fishing time (or come back in the correct season) and try again.

Step 9: Turn in after you have two kingfish
Once you’ve caught your second kingfish, return to Delphin and hand in the quest items to complete the Expert Angler quest and receive Expert Angler status.
Kingfish and where you catch them
| Region | Example kingfish mentioned | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coral Sea | Swordfish King | Requires Golden Rod minimum |
| Celeste Wave | Long barbled dragonfish | Region-specific ocean kingfish |
| Lumen Wave | Mega mouth shark | Region-specific ocean kingfish |
| Rivers | Paddlefish, Arropia | Also possible to catch certain kingfish in rivers |
Rewards you get for completing Expert Angler

You unlock the Expert Angler status after completing this mission and progress to the next chapter in the game.
If you prepare the fish pond setup early and arrive at the ocean zone with a Golden Rod (or better), you can usually finish the kingfish portion in a single focused run. Plan around stamina and timing, and you’ll avoid the most common slowdown: being in the right place at the wrong time.
