We’ve been hearing of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Marshmallow update for a long time now, but weren’t yet given a definite timeline for the update to hit in the US.
But thanks to a recent confirmation by one of Sprint employees, we now know that at-least the Sprint S6 and S6 Edge variants are receiving the much awaited Marshmallow update in mid-February.
The Marshmallow update will be coming with Android 6.0.1 on-board as we know Samsung has been testing the beta builds in the UK for quite some time, plus the Korean Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Marshmallow 6.0.1 firmwares are also available for download officially.
This is great news for all Sprint S6 and S6 Edge users, but for folks among us concerned about root, well, we’re hopeful that root would be simple, but could only tell for sure once the 6.0.1 Marshmallow firmwares are available.
Sprint S6 and S6 Edge Marshmallow 6.0.1 OTA/Firmware might not allow you to downgrade back to 5.1.1 build, so if root is something you can’t do a day without, we would recommend you to NOT install the 6.0.1 OTA on your devices until root is confirmed on the Marshmallow release.
That said, we’re pretty hopeful that root will be achieved on the Sprint S6 and S6 Edge without much trouble. Chainfire’s systemless root should be able to get your Marshmallow update rooted in a flash of a zip from recovery OR by flashing CF Auto Root from Odin. However, if systemless root fails, than the previously known rooting method by flashing a modified custom kernel should still work.
We’ll be sure to update this post once the Sprint S6 and S6 Edge Marshmallow 6.0.1 OTA is out, and if it’s rootable or not. Stay tuned..
Happy Androiding!
