Sony announced today that select cameras can now automatically upload photos and videos directly to Google Drive or Adobe Lightroom. The feature arrives as part of an update to the company's Creators' Cloud platform, finally catching up to similar cloud integration features offered by competitors.
The new automatic upload capability works by first sending files to Sony's Creators' Cloud service, which then handles the transfer to either Google Drive or Lightroom. It's available on Sony's latest generation of cameras, including the a1, a1 II, a7 IV, a7S III, a7R V, FX3, FX30, and ZV-E10 II.
"In response to creator requests for a faster, more seamless workflow, this new feature allows users to automatically transfer images and videos to external cloud storage providers, offering immediate accessibility for collaborative editing and organization across platforms."— Sony
Storage management will be important for users taking advantage of the feature. Sony offers 5GB of free cloud storage by default, with camera owners getting bumped up to 25GB. Additional storage is available for a monthly fee, though files can be deleted from Sony's cloud once they've been transferred to their final destination.
The company has also added "differential transfer" to its smartphone app, which only uploads new or unsent files to speed up the transfer process. There's also a new "Enhanced Remote Control" feature that lets photographers adjust camera settings through their phones, though Sony hasn't specified exactly which settings are available for remote adjustment.
The updated Creators' App is available now on both iOS and Android. While this update helps modernize Sony's ecosystem, it's worth noting that older camera models are still limited to the previous Edge app, which doesn't support these new cloud features.
