The Xperia S was the last flagship Android smartphone that Sony released in India, with the Xperia T failing to make its way to the country for reasons known only to Sony. However, the Xperia Z won’t meet the same fate as the device has been launched in India by Sony and is already up for pre-order on online retailers like Flipkart and Saholic.
Perhaps the first flagship smartphone to come with dust- and water-proofing, the Xperia Z sports a 5-inch display of Full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, with Sony’s newest Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 for improved picture and video quality. A quad-core Snapdragon S4 Krait processor clocked at 1.5GHz along with 2GB of RAM give the Xperia Z all the power it needs to push all those pixels on its display and provide a smooth and fast smartphone experience.
The Xperia Z sports a 13-megapixel camera on the back and a 2.2-megapixel camera on the front, both capable of 1080p video recording. A special feature of the camera on the Xperia Z is that it can take both HDR photos and videos, with the latter being an industry first thanks to Sony’s work on their Exmor RS sensors.
In terms of connectivity, the Xperia Z leaves no stone unturned either, with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS with GLONASS, HSPA 42mbps, NFC, as well as DLNA support. 16GB of built-in storage and a microSD slot, a 2,330 mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (an update to Android 4.2 is incoming soon) round off the impressive spec sheet.
According to Infibeam, the Xperia Z will be released on March 9, while Flipkart estimates a release sometime in the 3rd week of March. While nothing is certain, we’ll certainly hope the March 9th release date is met as many out there are no doubt waiting quite impatiently to their hands on this beauty of a smartphone.
As for price, Sony has hit the sweet spot by launching the Xperia Z at Rs. 38,990, which is great considering all the top-end specs of the Xperia Z. Right when it seemed that Android flagships will soon start costing more than an iPhone, Sony has come along and proved us wrong, and here’s hoping others manufacturers follow in Sony’s footsteps.
