What to know

  • Sony launches A1 II camera with AI processor and better controls.
  • Features 50.1MP sensor with 8.5-stop stabilization and 8K/30fps video.
  • Available next month for $6,500 with a new grip design.

Sony’s new A1 II camera brings major updates to its top model. The camera keeps the 50.1-megapixel sensor but adds new features for better photos and videos.

The new AI processor helps the camera focus faster and more accurately. It spots birds’ eyes 50% better and tracks humans and animals 30% better than before. The camera now switches between different subjects on its own.

Sony changed how the camera feels in your hands with a bigger grip and new button layout like the A9 III. You get a 3.2-inch screen that moves four ways and a clear electronic viewfinder that refreshes quickly. The menus are now easier to use.

The a1 II features a new four-axis tilting LCD screen.

For video work, you can shoot 8K at 30 frames per second using the whole sensor. The camera also handles 4K at 120 fps and HD at 240 fps. It records high-quality 10-bit video and helps keep your shots steady.

You can use two memory cards – either CFexpress Type A or SD cards. The camera has all the ports you need: HDMI, USB-C, and faster Ethernet for sending files.

Sony will also sell a new 28-70mm f/2 lens that works well with this camera. The lens comes out in December 2024 and costs $2,900.
