After initial reports last week about two new Samsung devices model numbered GT-N5100 and GT-N5110 going through WiFi and DLNA certification, it was inferred from the leaked certification data that both devices were 7-inch hybrids, likely from the Galaxy Note series, owing to the model numbering sequence. While the actual name for these devices is yet unconfirmed, it appeared that one of these was a WiFi only device, with the other having WiFi + 3G capability. Other than that no other information could be determined.
Earlier today, UAProf data from Samsung’s wap site revealed the GT-N5100 as having a 1280 x 800 WXGA display. Later today, a senior official from Samsung Electronics denied the existence of any such 7-inch device from Samsung, upon being questioned by a reporter.
That sounds quite strange, considering the device, or should we say devices, have gone through a certification process through official bodies, and such accurate Samsung specific model numbers along with a bunch of other details outlining some specs cannot just spring out of nowhere. But stranger things have been known to happen in the Android world.
It is very much possible that Samsung was absolutely truthful when they said that there is indeed no 7-inch device in the works. It is also possible that the device measures 8-9 inches. After all, the idea here seemed to be to bridge the gap between the 5.5″ and 10.1″ space with a hybrid device. Also possible that with Apple’s release of the 7.9″ iPad Mini, Sammy decided to go one up with a 8″+ device, rather than a smaller 7″ one.
Phew! While we can never be sure till there is more irrefutable information that confirms the existence of an in-the-works device, what we can be sure about is that Samsung is keeping its cards very close to its chest this time. And given that, looks like there may be some really exciting devices coming up next year. Nexus Note anyone?
