Apple may have reached a settlement with Taiwanese giant HTC, but it seems to be in no mood to give in or slow down its attempts in the ongoing patent war with the world’s largest smartphone maker – Samsung. Earlier this week, Samsung had filed an appeal with a California court for a copy of Apple’s settlement and patent license agreement with HTC, which is incidentally still under wraps, claiming that the document is relevant to its own legal tangle with Apple.
Looks like the court found that to be a valid request, and ordered Apple to reveal all details and terms of its legal settlement with HTC, without delay. Samsung had also filed a legal request to include three newly released Apple products — the iPod Touch 5, the iPad 4 and the iPad mini — to the list of devices that it has originally reported to have infringed on some of its patents.
It appears that Apple has not taken this turn of events too well, and has made a legal request of its own to include six additional Samsung devices to the list. The devices include the Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.1 Jelly bean, the newly released Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 WiFi, the Rugby Pro and the Galaxy S3 Mini.
It is yet to be known whether the court has granted this request, but for now, things don’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down in the clash between these titans. In the meantime, Samsung continues to enjoy an unprecedented run as far as sales figures go, and is expected to ship close to or maybe even more than 60 million smartphones in Q4-2012.
Let’s hope this mess gets sorted out soon, so that Samsung can go back to what it does best – make great Android devices for us. After all, there’s a Galaxy S4 that needs releasing soon.
